FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Physical health can serve as a metaphor for spiritual health. Health begins with eating healthy foods, like this radicchio salad for the body, but it also includes digesting the spiritual teachings of great saints. Think about what you need in order to be healthier in body, mind, and spirit.

SEPTEMBER 5 SAINT TERESA OF CALCUTTA

A good litmus test of a person’s basic decency is whether he or she smiles at the sight of a little child—or at a photograph of Mother Teresa (1910–1997). It is difficult not to be moved by Blessed Teresa of Calcutta’s signature radiant smile, her incredible story of helping India’s most helpless poor and sick, and her successful founding of the Missionaries of Charity, which today has over 4,500 sisters in 133 countries who run orphanages, schools, missions, shelters, AIDS hospices, and charity centers.
